ON first inspection, there seems precious little Christmas cheer about this pictorial blast from the past (below).

No colourful bunting or fairy lights in view, and the only clue to the party occasion being in the shape of a rather incongruous looking, Santa Claus, complete with unconvincing cotton-wool beard. He's squatting in the midst of a Moss Bank Labour Club gang of about half a century ago, who, judging by their sober countenances don't seem to have yet joined in the festive thrash.

The peep-back photo comes courtesy of Brian Stenson, current club member, who guesses that the shot was taken around the mid-1950s and identifies Father Christmas as being Charlie Clisham, whose wife Ginnie is also among the group.

Other fondly remembered old-timers, most of them now believed to be no longer with us, are named as Jimmy and Lizzie Tracey, Jimmy and Mary McLouhglin, Joe Haggerty and Tommy Lindsay.

Wonder if any of today's breed of Moss Bankers can recognise the others?
