TRAVELLERS' camps are to be stopped by new landscaping on Cromwell Avenue.

The corner of Cromwell Avenue and Callands Road has been plagued by make shift camps over the summer months in past years.

Last year residents set up a petition to get rid of their problem neighbours and this year the camp was moved on within 24-hours because it has been designated a sensitive area.

Now Warrington Borough Council has started to landscape the grass verge to stop travellers descending on it in the future.

Delighted Gordon McKibben, of Callands Road, said: "It's marvellous because we were all so angry and sad when the travellers were here.

"Last year there was a problem with them knocking on doors at midnight asking for water and this year the mess that was left was awful.

"The landscaping means people can't come back to this particular place again, so we're delighted.

"I reckon it's going to look very nice and am pleased the council has taken action."

Elsie Forshaw, of Pendine Close, said: "I'm very pleased but I hope they put some flowers and trees on top.

"It's quite flat at the moment, so possibly the travellers could come back.

"You wouldn't mind if they didn't leave such a mess but they always leave the ditch full of rubbish."

A borough council spokesman said grass would be planted soon.

Peter Connell, strategic director of neighbourhood services, added: "The borough council believes this is a cost effective method of preventing this kind of situation from occurring in the area in the future.

"Action to prevent unauthorised access to landscape areas adjacent to Pendine Close, Callands has been carried out because this is a particularly vulnerable location which has suffered from repeated incursions in recent years."
