his tongue
WARRINGTON Wolves centre Ben Westwood swallowed his tongue while playing in Sunday's match against Huddersfield Giants at The Halliwell Jones Stadium.
Westwood, who recovered sufficiently to walk away from the ground and travel home to Wakefield, was stretchered off the field in the 75th minute.
He twisted out of a number of tacklers' grasps before being knocked out cold in an accidental clash of heads.
The former Wakefield star lost the ball in the challenge and referee Richard Silverwood played on but it was a Huddersfield player who spotted something was wrong.
Back row forward Stuart Jones, who is on loan from St Helens, signalled for the club's medical team straight away.
And, while play was still continuing further up field, Jones turned Westwood into the recovery position.
Wolves' medics raced on the field along with Huddersfield's club doctor to make sure Westwood's tongue was released and his air way was clear for breathing.
Wolves' head coach Paul Cullen said: "It was a combination of Stuart Jones, the Huddersfield medical staff and our medical staff who managed what could have been a very difficult situation."
