I HEARD recently about the death of Mr Fred Matthias.
This talented and energetic man spent many years of his life teaching and inspiring people young and not so young to make music, be it in school bands, St Helens Concert Band or judging contests for wind bands or with the Citadel Arts band.
He organised charity concerts of all kinds and in many venues. He gave his time and immense ability freely to arranging events of all kinds including remembrance services.
As such a person he deserves a fitting memorial and the best kind in my opinion is one that would benefit a young musician from the Borough of St Helens. For instance a 'Fred Matthias Scholarship' to the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester.
Surely among his many friends this could be done and once it had started a web site would reach past pupils from around the world who might wish to contribute and make sure that in this way his work would go on.
