Baxter leading GB's bid for victory

A WARRINGTON man is leading the bid to bring Rugby League's Victory Cup to Great Britain.

Neil Baxter is the manager of the BARLA Lions team which flew out to Russia from Manchester yesterday, Wednesday, in preparation for Group B games against New Zealand on Monday and France on May 13.

Baxter said before flying out: "The lads have trained really well. It will be a fantastic experience for everyone and we hope to bring back the Victory Cup."

The squad includes Wath Brow's Craig Calvert, who had trials with Warrington Wolves under 21s last year and if BARLA reach the final against the Group A winners it will take place on May 20.

Lombard Trophy

WARRINGTON golfers Walter Winstanley and Reay Mackay will be dreaming of warmer climes as they prepare for the regional final of Europe's biggest pro-am competition the Lombard Trophy.

They won a qualifying competition with a nett score of 67 and they will take a further step towards a luxury five-day trip to San Lorenzo in Portugal if they come through the regional final at Dunham Forest Golf Club on May 28.

Winstanley plays off a handicap of 14.

The amateur golfer lives in Warrington with his wife while 38-year-old professional Mackay has lived in the town for 15 years.

Cricket coaching

GLAZEBROOK Cricket Club will be holding junior coaching sessions at Lowton High School throughout May.

The one-hour Friday night sessions will start at 6pm and will be supervised by qualified coaches.

Glazebury will be running under 11s and under 13s teams in the North Cheshire Junior Cricket Association this summer so youngsters will have the opportunity to play in matches with the club.

Tetley open darts

THERE is a guaranteed £100 plus first prize for the Tetley Walker open darts competition on Sunday.

And there will be more money to be won in a follow up event for those that lose in the first round.

Forrest on fire

BOROUGH B ace T Forrest was victorious in the Church Street Open Dominoes competition on Sunday.

He beat Bank Quay player P Weston in the final.

The losing semi-finalists were Eagle's D Unsworth and Gas Social's R Newton while D Melbourne, P Wrench, N Fellows and M Kirk reached the quarter-finals stage.

Rose Bowl event

WARRINGTON Women's Evening Bowls League's Rose Bowl competition takes place at Orford Park on Sunday.

There will be a 10.30am start and an 11am scratch and refreshments will be made available.
