PENKETH United went through mixed emotions as the first of this year's annual Warrington Junior Soccer League Cup finals were played at the weekend.

It was a great achievement for the under 13s and under 14s teams to reach their age group's Auxiliary Cup finals at the Victoria Park Arena but the teams lost to out of town opposition.

The under 13s lost 1-0 to Wigan Junior Latics.

Wigan's winning goal came five minutes into the second half when J Patten cut inside from the right wing and sent in a 25 metres speculative shot that deceived Penketh's goalkeeper.

After that, neither side could create a clear opportunity until the last five minutes when Penketh had two very good chances, both of which went narrowly wide.

In the first half a good passing movement from Wigan resulted in an inviting right wing cross being headed over.

Shortly afterwards Penketh had a free kick about 25 metres out that was fired wide.

A goalmouth scramble soon after nearly brought a Penketh goal in what was a closely fought contest throughout.

The under 14s were defeated 2-0 by Widnes side Bayer.

Each team had beaten the other in league games this season and this close affair reflected that.

The turning point of the game came when the Bayer goalkeeper made an outstanding save. Bayer cleared the ensuing goalmouth scramble, Penketh seemed to be stunned at not scoring and R Gregson picked up the ball on the right wing and put Bayer into the lead.

In the second half Bayer hit the woodwork and Penketh wasted a free kick and had a good chance to equalise after a pull back.

Penketh were urged from the touchline to seek the equaliser but they were caught on the counter attack by Bayer.

R Gregson netted his second goal after the Penketh goalkeeper had deflected a shot into his path three yards out.

Three more finals will take place this weekend. See glance guide for details.
