Bacup Borough 0

Warrington Town 1

WARRINGTON Town signed off their season on a triumphant note to finish fifth in North West Counties Soccer League Division One.

Town had won only one of their previous five games and they had lost to Bacup Borough three times in the past five weeks.

But they had only lost twice on their travels since November and they extended that record on Saturday by holding their nerve in a tense climax to the campaign.

Mike Heverin hit the match winning goal against Bacup midway through the second half.

The striker has played a vital contribution in Town's rise up the table since re-signing for the club when they were in the bottom three in October.

And he made no mistake when he broke free inside Bacup's penalty box - firing in a low shot to net his eighth goal in nine games.

Town should have scored more goals but they were frustrated by a tenacious and organised Bacup defence.

Chris Berminghan supplied a through ball for Heverin early on but his powerful shot was well parried by former Bolton Wanderers goalkeeper David Felgate, who was in inspirational form four days earlier when Bacup beat Town 2-1.

The ball rebounded to Dave Tickle but he too was thwarted by Felgate.

Fellow midfielder Steve Latham then wasted a good chance to score when he headed Terry Nestor's cross wide with only Felgate to beat.

But the miss did not prove to be costly. Bacup created only one worthwhile goal scoring opportunity all game and Town, who were well supported by their large contingent of travelling fans, were worthy winners.
