SUNDAY is D-day for Warrington Town as they await news on which league they will be playing in next season.

Town are hoping to have gained promotion to the UniBond League on the back of their fifth-placed finish in North West Counties Soccer League Division One.

The Football Association are set to restructure the non-league pyramid system for the start of the 2004/05 season and their plans will be finalised in a meeting on Sunday.

Town have been led to believe that up to five teams in their division could be granted UniBond promotion. And their promotion hopes have been boosted by the fact that Fleetwood Town, who finished the north west counties season in third spot, have been rejected for higher flight football due to the standard of their ground.

The same fate may be bestowed on fourth-placed Woodley Sports due to an arson attack.

But Town manager Glenn Walker will consider the season to have been a huge success whatever the outcome of Sunday's meeting.

Walker replaced Alan Blair for the start of the campaign in a joint manager role with Derek Brownbill.

He then took sold command in January with Brownbill moving upstairs as the club's director of football.

Walker said: "We have had a fantastic season. Last year we finished the season in 17th place so to have come fifth is quite an achievement.

"We have also had good cup runs and I couldn't have asked for anymore from my players. They should be proud of their efforts."

Walker credits the season's success to shrewd signings, hard work and a good team spirit.

And he is confident of retaining the services of all of his key players for the next campaign.

He said: "I know this division like the back of my hand and the players I have brought in have done the business for us.

"We have been one of the top two or three teams in the league since November and it is a shame that the season has had to end."
