WARRINGTON'S latest crop of up and coming stars showed the world of crown green bowls why Warrington is being hailed as being the game's number one junior development area.

For the second year running Warrington's under 16 team have won the Lancashire area of the national league championship run by the Federation of Crown Green Bowls.

They will go on to play games in the Yorkshire and Cumbria area later this season.

The new look team, that consisted of players from the town's Saturday morning league, took the title at the Dugdale Bowls Club in Blackburn following victories over South Derbyshire 8-1, Fylde 6-3 and East Lancashire 6-3.

It was a great performance from the team, specially considering the relatively young age of the Warrington team.

Some of the most notable performances were from Sarah Drewery, who won all three of her games and was awarded the team player of the tournament; 10-year-old Daniel Roberts, who scored a 21-11 victory and Jason Pearson, who won all three of his matches.

While the town's revamped junior team were doing a demolition job, last year's triumphant junior side, who are now representing the town at youth level, were setting the bowls greens alight at the East Lancashire Bowls Club.

In their first match, the youth team managed to gain a 5-4 victory against more experienced players from Fylde thanks to a 21-9 victory from Rachel Wightman.

In the second game the team excelled themselves, defeating South Derbyshire 7-2. Star performers in this game were John Brown Steven Fisher, Chris Bradshaw and Daniel Watson.

The best, however, was to come. The final match against the host district and the favourites to win the championship, East Lancashire, was a classic match of bowls with Warrington squeezing home 5-4 to clinch the title.

The players of the match were Lee Baley and Peter Maddock, who was awarded the team player of the youth tournament.
