BIRCHWOOD Town Council has written to the chief executive of Warrington Borough Council asking for clarification on funding for traffic calming schemes in the area.

The town council claims borough highways chiefs have told them the district can have traffic calming measures if the council pays for it.

But at a recent meeting, interim chief executive David Whitehead said that was not the case and each application was judged on merit.

Now Birchwood councillors are asking for the borough council to make its position clear.

Birchwood does not have any traffic calming measures, despite having four schools in its boundaries.

Councillor David Eccles said: "There are speed bumps and 30 mile an hour signs painted on the road in Culcheth.

"That traffic going through Culcheth has to have come through Birchwood in either direction."

A letter from highways chiefs indicated that Birchwood could have traffic calming measures if the council was prepared to part-fund a scheme.
