STUDENTS at Birchwood High School brought history to life last week when they re-enacted the Battle of Hastings.

The year seven real-life history lesson was co-ordinated by history teacher John Burnham who wanted to show students the intricacies of one of the country's biggest turning points.

Mr Burnham said: "It has been a very enjoyable morning for the students.

"It is an experience that they will not forget. It is important to use a wide range of teaching strategies so that every student gets the chance to learn in their preferred style."

Students spent six weeks preparing for the battle. They used an instruction sheet to make their weapons and costumes.

Regular lunchtime workshops in the run up to the battle helped students design and make their battle armour.

The year group was divided into two groups, with three forms making up the Normans and the remaining four lining up as the Saxons.

The living history lesson demonstrated to the pupils the different stages of the battle that led to the ultimate Norman victory.
