AN open day showcasing the planned expansion works at Oughtrington Community Centre in Lymm takes place later this month.

And the revamp of the Sandy Lane centre should provide a much-needed boost for everyone living in the area as well as current users of the facility.

The so-called Westenders project will not only redevelop the existing facility but provide for expansion into areas of the building currently not used.

A spokesman said: "The building, which is owned and run by the local community, has been falling into disrepair and the inability to accommodate all who wish to use it prompted the formation of a development group - the Westenders.

"Three and a half years on, architect's plans have been drawn up, planning permission has been granted and St Peter's Church Committee has joined in."

Fundraising for the project, which will run into hundreds of thousands of pounds, will be launched through the open day on Sunday, May 16, and will run throughout the summer with various events scheduled in the diary.

This will be followed by a hog roast on July 10, a musical evening with members of Lymm Festival Orchestra on July 4 as part of Lymm Festival followed by a ball on November 13.

The community centre is home to pre-school, the luncheon club, scouts and guides and can be hired out to private groups.

Details on the events and a copy of the plans can be seen by visiting their website at www.oughtrington.co.uk, or by calling Sue on 756419 or Frances on 754525.

Volunteers are welcome to join the project.
