FIVE young people were badly hurt when a car smashed into a lamppost during the early hours of last Wednesday morning.
The red Vauxhall car struck the lamppost on a stretch of Birchley Road, Billinge, between Birchley St Mary's Primary School and a garage.
A man and woman, believed to be aged in their late teens to early 20s, were both trapped in the mangled wreckage. Fire crews spent more than an hour cutting both of them free. According to the ambulance service, three other young men were unconscious at the scene and were taken to hospital. Paramedics were joined at the scene by medic teams from Whiston Hospital.
The female victim is believed to have suffered a broken femur, while two of the men are also thought to have suffered serious leg injuries.
All the victims were taken to Whiston Hospital. Police are appealing for witnesses to the accident that happened at about 2.25am. Anyone with information can contact 0151 777 5730.
