TEENAGERS wanting to play sport in new youth-only zones will have to be referred by the youth service or Connexions.

St Helens Council has earmarked £150,000 for youth-only zones in Newton's Selwyn Jones Leisure Centre and Queen's Park and Sutton in St Helens.

They are being set up outside of normal leisure hours to give young people more things to do and to make better use of the borough's leisure centres.

Last week the council said there were no other details available about the scheme.

But, the Newton and Golborne Guardian has since discovered that there will be a trial project first at Queens Park Leisure Centre before the youth only zones are rolled out in Newton and Sutton.

The activities will be varied according to what the young people want but it will not be open to everyone.

Only teenagers referred from the youth service or Connexions will be admitted.

Clr Marie Rimmer, council leader, said: "We hope that the pilot youth-only zones will be up and running shortly. They will not impinge upon the present use of leisure centres but will enable us to make better use of our assets."
