A PADGATE mum has praised staff at Warrington Hospital's neonatal unit for saving the life of her premature baby and described them as 'part of the family'.

Amanda Plumbley, aged 26, gave birth to baby Connor on October 26 last year. He was born three months premature and weighed in at a tiny 1lb 14oz.

Now six months old, Connor has come on in strides.

Amanda said: "Connor was so small we didn't think he would make it through but he has come on in leaps and bounds since the beginning of December and we're thrilled with his progress. He now weighs 10lb and he rules the roost."

Despite Connor's fight for life being a terrifying time for Amanda and husband Ian, the couple say they cannot thank staff on the unit enough for their support.

She added: "They are the most amazing people I've ever met. Not only did they help Connor by making him better, they also helped Ian and I through, by being there for us too. They're like part of our family now."

Amanda, of Steele Street, regularly meets with mothers and babies she met on the unit as they continue to offer support to each other.

The annual family fun day in aid of the neo natal unit will take place this Sunday, May 9, from 1pm until 4pm at Sycamore Lane Primary School in Great Sankey.

Attractions include a bouncy slide, children's entertainer, face painting and karaoke.

There will also be two signed Manchester United shirts up for auction and Dr Alex Reid, senior paediatric registrar, has agreed to be gunged on the day to boost funds. To place a bid for a shirt, contact Debbie Yates on 445550.

Donations for the raffle, cake, book and toy stalls are needed and anyone who wishes to make a contribution or help out on the day should call the number above.

l Neonatal unit staff care for approximately 250 babies a year, some of them critically ill. Many have been born prematurely while others are new born babies with infections or breathing problems. The unit is equipped with life support machines and staffed by specialist nurses.
