The Mid Cheshire Division One outfit secured a place in the UEFA Regions Cup as winners of the inaugural FA National Systems Cup in which they represented Mid Cheshire.

Assistant manager Mark Warburton is delighted with the result and is now relishing the trip to Slovenia, where Barnton will represent England in the Central/West group facing teams such as Malta, Northern Ireland and the hosts, Slovenia.

He said: "It seems almost surreal knowing the size of the competition next season and thinking that we are going to be representing England.

"It is mind-blowing to think that Barnton will be playing for England. Nobody in our league will ever repeat this."

The Mid Cheshire League chose Barnton as representatives because of their excellent track record in a division they have won in seven of the past eight seasons.

And they qualified for Europe in style with a 2-0 win over Cambridgeshire Premier League with the goals coming in the second and 88th minute.

Cambridgeshire started the match in nervy fashion and Barnton exploited this with a well-taken goal.

Aiden Brodigan crossed to the far post and man of the match Chris Gehgan was on hand to head home from close range.

Barnton had the majority of possession for the remainder of the half, but found Cambridgeshire keeper Alan Sutton in excellent form.

He made a magnificent save in the 11th minute to deny Gehgan and then produced three saves in rapid succession to keep his side in the game.

At the other end Cambridgeshire rarely threatened with only Richard Chadwick going close in the first period.

The second half saw the home side adopt a far more attacking posture, but they simply couldn't find a way past the Barnton defence and Ritchie Mottram between the posts.

As Cambridgeshire went looking for the equaliser Barnton tried to exploit gaps at the back and in the 88th minute they got their reward.

Substitute Nick Towey had only been on the pitch for 11 minutes when he turned the otherwise faultless Sean Frost inside out with a superb piece of skill on the by-line and clipped the ball past Sutton.

MID CHESHIRE: Mottram, Starchevski, Fraser (Robinson 51), Boardman, Davies, Coll, Pennington, Critchley (Towey 76), Murray, Brodigan, Gehgan. Subs not used: Jones, Smith, Barlow.
