BYLEY was transformed into a world of fairies and princesses for the village rose fete on Saturday.

The whole village got into the spirit of the 20th Byley Rose Fete and if they were not taking part they came along to show their support and have some fun on the village field.

There was plenty of pageantry as rose queen Victoria Bennion, 10, and her attendant Charlotte Hawksworth, nine, led the procession in a Rolls Royce, provided by one of the villagers.

Other royal roles were taken on by Anna Ford, eight, as the queen of the fairies and eight-year-old Hannah Hawksworth was the fete's rose bud princess.

Rose fete committee member Ruth Bennion said: "It went very well and we were fortunate with the weather as it was just a bit blustery.

"There were plenty of people there and all the children enjoyed it.

"There was a milking the cow competition, sheep shearing, lots of stalls and the tiny tots procession as well."

George Osbourne MP opened the event and entertainment included displays by the Renaissance Dance Group, a coconut shy, stalls and the vintage tractors kept the children busy for hours as usual.

Children were dressed as fairies, pearly princesses, flower girls and the boys were not left out, as there were crown bearers and soldiers who joined in the fun.

Organisers are not sure yet how much money was raised but all proceeds will go towards St John the Evangelist Church in Byley.
