A BUS shelter that was knocked down after it became a magnet for anti-social behaviour on the Grange Estate is to be reinstated.

One year on from the original shelter being removed following complaints, transport officers at Cheshire County Council have agreed to put up a new and improved facility on Abbots Way after community pressure which included a petition.

Clr Des Worthington said that he thought the police would step up patrols around the new shelter.

He added: "Cheshire County Council intends to reinstate the bus shelter at the top of Abbot's Way at the request of residents who sent in a petition complaining there was no protection from the elements, especially during winter months.

"The original shelter was removed due to nuisance behaviour and vandalism.

"We're sure that both young and old will benefit from having an improved facility and will give consideration to the residents who live next to the shelter."

However, Sgt Ian Woods from Winsford's community action team expressed concern that disorder could break out once more at the shelter.

In the past youngsters climbed on top of the shelter, played football outside it and created a racket by using it for impromptu drumming sessions when they banged on the shelter's sides.

Sgt Wood said: "It's disappointing that we were not part of the consultation to bring the shelter back.

"People need to be sheltered from inclement weather but if there's a problem with having it there then maybe it should be moved to a different place."

Clr Tony Hooton said: "Obviously there are still some people who do not want the shelter back again but on balance we think people will benefit from it.

"I have promised residents that we will ask the county council to review the situation in a few months' time."
