PEWITHALL Primary School has won £300 for its recycling work.

The Runcorn school's pupils collected more than five old Yellow Pages directories per pupil for recycling.

Moore Primary School came second and won £200 and St Bede's in Widnes came third and won £100.

A total of 22 schools took part in the challenge over the last five weeks, collecting 5,757 old directories.

All schools from the Halton Challenge will be entered into the Yellow Woods Challenge UK Finals in October 2004 where they will compete with up to 1,200 schools from across the UK to win cash prizes of up to £2,000.

Yellow Pages will match the donations to the schools with donations to the Woodland Trust.

All participating schools have been given free educational materials containing fun environmental activities to teach children about recycling and woodland conservation.

Lesley Barnabas, recycling officer for Halton Council, said: "The Yellow Woods Challenge has been a huge success in Halton.

"Schools have had great fun recycling old directories and learning about the environment and woodland. It has also been a great opportunity for the council to raise the profile of recycling locally."
