A FORMER landfill site on Croxton Lane has been transformed into a riverside leisure facility and wildlife haven.

During the past two years Cheshire County Council has worked with the town council and residents to transform the seven-acre site into Croxton Trail Park.

And on Friday the trail was officially opened by Dr John Fraser, vice-chairman of the county council, and Middlewich Mayor Clr Jim Basford.

Lady Ann Winterton, MP for Congleton, also joined the celebrations.

Dr Fraser said: "The transformation of this piece of land is a fitting tribute to the hard work of everyone who has taken part. It shows what can be achieved when the community, Middlewich Town Council and Cheshire County Council work closely together.

"I am sure that this manmade trail in its tranquil, riverside setting will be enjoyed by residents and visitors for generations to come."

About 2,000 trees and shrubs have been planted, a meadow and picnic area have been created, kissing gates installed and existing footpaths improved and new ones created across the old landfill. Cheshire's own soil improver made from green waste deposited at the county council's recycling centres has been used for planting instead of expensive topsoil.

Jonathan Williams, town clerk, said: "This is a fantastic venture for Middlewich linking to the wider 'Vision Partnership' and providing a new facility for the town.

"The project has proved the benefits of working in partnership by adding local knowledge to the expertise of county council officers, resulting in an amenity which has far exceeded our initial expectations."
