A GOLFER from Whitegate is enjoying the success of publishing the third edition of his best-selling guide to the rules of golf.

Hadyn Rutter, who was born and raised in Winsford, wrote the first edition of The Golf Rules Dictionary in 1996 following a 'major dispute' at a golfing tournament in Thailand.

Having played golf since he was 40, Mr Rutter has organised numerous professional golf tournaments and with a wealth of experience behind him, the 57-year-old decided to take an in-depth look at the rules for himself to see how the dispute had arisen.

He said: "As a solicitor, I'm used to looking at all types of complicated documents.

"When I looked at the rules they were totally incomprehensible, which is when I decided to write my own book to help people to understand them.

"If I couldn't make sense of them then the majority of golfers were bound to have the same problem."

His aim was to create an up-to-date, easy to use guide as much for his own benefit as his fellow golfers and so The Golf Rules Dictionary was born.

This new edition includes all of the changes to the rules published by the Royal and Ancient (R&A) in 2004.

And as rule 6.1 states that a golfer is solely responsible for knowing, understanding and abiding by the rules, Mr Rutter's books are as essential a piece of kit as woods, irons and putters.

Mr Rutter said: "It's very satisfying to know the book has been sold worldwide and I've helped so many people with their understanding of the game."

Mr Rutter's book is available from the website www.golfrules

dictionary.com for £16.99 - £5 of which will be donated to the Children in Need charity.

l One Guardian golfing fanatic can have the chance to win a copy of The Golf Rules Dictionary by answering the following question: In what country did the golf rules dispute occur?

Write answers on a postcard to the Northwich Guardian, 15 Market Street, Northwich, Cheshire, CW9 5DT. The closing date is June 30.
