HALTON police want to buck the trend in drunken violence.
Across the country alcohol is associated with half of all violent crimes and surveys show people think the problem is getting worse.
Det Chf Insp John Chapman, crime manager for Halton Police, said: "Drinking habits have changed over the years and you can tell by the increasing numbers of licensed premises in places like Liverpool and Warrington.
"Drinks promotions make it easier for people to buy cheap alcohol in large quantities and basically binge drink to get drunk.
"We don't have the same number of pubs and clubs in Runcorn and Widnes compared to other places, but alcohol related violence still needs to be tackled in Halton."
The police look at violent crime trends every two weeks to check for 'hot spots', and pub and club door staff are monitored.
Det Chf Insp Chapman said: "It's important that we identify licensed premises where we do have a problem.
"But it's not just a matter of regulating the pubs and clubs, we also monitor off licenses to make sure they are not selling alcohol to under 18s.
"A lot of work is currently going on in Halton to create a nicer socialising environment, but this will take time."
