PRESIDENT Margaret McDonald began the June meeting of Antrobus WI by telling members that she should not really be using the microphone, but continued to do so!
All was revealed when she told members that, together with several other members, she had been to a workshop about speaking in public, where they were taught how to project the voice.
Volunteers are required to take part in the procession at the Rose Queen Fete on July 3, as well as helping with refreshments and the produce stall.
Members will be very busy making cakes for these as well as the Cheshire Show.
Frank Bonser then gave a most interesting and amusing talk about the seaside.
He told members that Scarborough is the oldest seaside town in England and was so popular because it had spa waters as well as the sea.
Blackpool was originally one row of fishermen's cottages.
He explained how people were dipped, the men in the nude and ladies in a long nightdress held down with lead weights.
They were held under the water until they nearly drowned - and this happened five times!
People drank seawater for their health.
Members heard about sunbathing, bathing costumes, landladies and holiday camps.
He brought back many memories of childhood visits to the seaside.
He was thanked by Jean Bennett.
The competition for a seashell was won by Joan Gibbons, with Jean Wilkinson second.
Important dates include Scrabble at Joy Corlett's house on June 28, the monthly meeting on July 13 with John Greenhough and Hatting, and a ploughman's lunch on July 21 at Whitley Village Hall.
