PETROL prices are continuing to rise due to soaring oil costs in the Middle East.

But as average prices for fuel reach the 83p per litre across the country, a Midweek Guardian survey shows fuel being sold cheaper in the town.

Prices included 82.9p per litre for petrol at the Texaco garage at Manchester Road, Woolston, and 81.9p per litre at the Total garage at Poplar 2000 services in Lymm.

And at Supermarkets such as Tesco, at Winwick Road, and Sainsbury's, at Church Street, the price is as low as 79.7p per litre.

A report by Castle Fuel Cards, which produces fuel-purchasing cards for companies, showed that the average motorist in England is now paying 5.2 per cent per litre more than they were at the start of May.

It also revealed that the price of a tankful of petrol in Cheshire varies by around £3.80 depending on where drivers are filling up.

Teresa Maynard, of Castle Fuel Cards, said: "We are now at the start of the summer peak in demand for oil worldwide.

"Together with continuing security worries in the Middle East, this means that drivers should not expect prices to come down anywhere near as fast as they went up."

Back in 2000 fuel costs sparked pickets across the country, including one at Stanlow Oil Refinery near Ellesmere Port.

Panic buying ensued and costs at petrol stations soared.
