Where are we heading

YOUR readers may be interested in an encounter I had on Thursday while selling poppies at the Knutsford M6 services.

A young man walked past me several times before asking for help.

In halting English, with a German accent, he told me he was lost and wanted to get to Holyhead.

He showed me his European road atlas.

I showed him where he was and traced the roads to Holyhead for him.

But when I looked closely to tell him which road numbers to follow - the M6, A550, A55 and A5 - I understood why he was baffled.

All our roads on his maps were in E numbers. E22 etc. 'A5' etc was visible only in rare instances as '5'. How many of our roads are listed as E numbers? None. (Yet.)

How many of us drive on the left? None. (Not yet)

John Prescott recently got a bloody nose from the voters over his regional assemblies.

No one wants them. His response was to say they will carry on, unaccountable, undemocratic and without any mandate.

Tony Blair recently signed the EU's proposed Constitution to make Brussels the capital of the new Soviet Union of Europe.

That Constitution lays down that Brussels law now has primacy over the laws of all 25 nation states in the European Union. That confirms that our Parliament is already a puppet of the unelected and unaccountable elite in Brussels.

Blair may well give us a referendum in 2006 on that Constitution.

Does anyone believe the political elite will take our No for an answer?

The leaders of several states in the EU have already agreed to implement that Constitution without asking their electorates.

Blair, too, I imagine.

Scotland's elite has just passed a law threatening heavy fines on anyone who smokes in public.

I detest cigarette smoke, but I would defend anyone's right to smoke if they are considerate about it. We are being led by stealth into a totalitarian future.
