CHILDREN in Winsford are unplugging their video games and taking up the game of chess thanks to a scheme organised by two enthusiasts.

Chess has become the game of the moment after pop icons Madonna and Westlife featured the game in music videos earlier this year.

It seems children in Winsford have got the chess fever and it is hoped the new club will be a success.

Valerie Buckley, who runs the scheme with her husband Alan, said: "There is a great desire for children in Winsford to play chess so we are looking forward to it.

"The club will be based at St Chad's Primary School but we are opening it up to all children in the town.

"We want to get as many children as possible involved because I'm sure once they try it they will love it."

The chess club meets every Tuesday at St Chad's Primary School between 4.15pm and 6.15pm.
