A new Mayor of Warrington has been formally appointed.
Cllr Sagheer Zaman, Labour, becomes the 142nd Mayor of Warrington.
Cllr Zaman takes on the civic role from Cllr Mo Hussain following more than 25 years of voluntary and community service in Warrington. His mayoral year will focus on promoting unity, inclusion and civic pride, celebrating the values shared by residents across the borough.
He said: “It is a great honour to serve Warrington as mayor. I am proud of our rich diversity and strong sense of community, and I will work throughout my mayoral year to represent every resident with fairness, respect and pride.”
Born and raised in Warrington, Cllr Zaman was educated at Beamont Primary School, Woolston High School and Priestley College before graduating from Manchester Metropolitan University with a degree in multimedia computing.
Cllr Zaman has played a leading role in community and voluntary organisations across Warrington. He has been a member of Warrington Ethnic Communities Association (WECA) since its formation in 2004 and currently serves as its chair. He is also a key organiser of the Warrington Mela, helping to develop the annual event into one of the town’s flagship celebrations of cultural diversity, attracting thousands of visitors.
The mayor has served on several council committees, including development management control, supporting the local economy, traffic, and appeals, and has previously held the role of chair of building stronger communities. He has also represented the council as an appointed member of the Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service Authority.
In addition, he has served on the executive committee of the Warrington Islamic Association, including roles as treasurer and vice chair, supporting fundraising and the delivery of a wide range of local community projects.
Elected as councillor for Fairfield and Howley in 2021 and re‑elected for a second term, the council highlighted that Cllr Zaman has built a strong reputation for advocacy, inclusion and neighbourhood engagement.
During his mayoral year, Cllr Zaman will be supported by mayoress Farah Zaman along with his children.
As mayor, he will support four chosen charities:
- Warrington Wolves Community Foundation
- Warrington Visual Impaired People
- Warrington Disability Partnership
- Warrington Charities Trust
Warrington’s deputy mayor for the civic year is Labour’s Cllr Maureen McLaughlin, a long‑serving cabinet member with significant experience in a range of senior roles.
First elected to the council in 2011, Cllr McLaughlin has served on cabinet since 2015, holding a number of key portfolios including public health, housing, and health, wellbeing and social care.
As Cllr McLaughlin steps down from cabinet, responsibility for the health, wellbeing and social care portfolio will transfer to Cllr Tony Higgins, and Cllr Una Gillham will assume responsibility for climate change, sustainability and the environment.
