BAR staff working at some licensed premises in Warrington are set to be sent for further training after failing a test by police.

Officers from Cheshire Police were out and about in the town on Friday night to ensure people are enjoying the festive period in a safe manner.

As part of their deployment, officers visited pubs and bars to check that bar staff were aware of the Ask for Angela initiative.

Ask for Angela is a discreet phrase used in bars, clubs, and other venues where someone feeling unsafe, vulnerable, or uncomfortable, prompting staff to help discreetly by calling a taxi, contacting friends, or removing the person causing distress.

While the vast majority of Warrington venues visited passed the test, staff from the 13 per cent that failed, premises that have not been named by the police, are set to be sent for further training.

The force’s Warrington South Police team said: “On Friday night, officers from the south Warrington beat team conducted testing around different pubs and bars in the area, asking for Angela.

“The Ask for Angela initiative was set up to help anyone in distress to leave a situation safely.

“Bar staff are trained to assist you by calling you a taxi or removing the person causing trouble.

“We are pleased to report that 87 per cent of venues passed. Premises that failed will be referred for further training.”

Members of Cheshire’s special constabulary team also attended a range of incidents in the town on Friday evening.

It said: “On Friday night, our teams in Warrington, Widnes, and Runcorn were out across the north of the county.

“They were involved in multiple incidents in Warrington, including two intruder alerts, a report of criminal damage, and two missing person reports, both of which were located.

“A person was also arrested on suspicion of breaching court bail conditions by being drunk and disorderly in a public place, while another was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly and assaulting an emergency worker.”
