AN £899,000 flood risk management project in an area of Warrington is planned to be completed by March next year.
A report on the Liverpool Road flood risk management project will come before the cabinet at its meeting next Monday, September 8,
“During heavy rainfall, water accumulates at the low point of Liverpool Road/Hood Lane and Huntley Street causing flooding to highway and properties,” it says.
“The area is at high risk of surface water flooding with a significant flood history.
“Given the frequency and extents of observed flooding, the flood risk shown on the EA flood mapping appears to be an underestimate of risk and a project is required as a matter of urgency to reduce flood risk at this location.
“Given the level of flood risk and significant flood history in the area, Liverpool Road is a high priority location for Warrington Borough Council.
“A public drop-in session was held at Liverpool Road to capture information and comments from the local community affected by repeated flooding events. This was well attended by a community clearly suffering the effects of flood anxiety.
“Attendees provided critical feedback and a united call from the community at risk for a project to reduce flood risk.”
According to the project timeline, construction is planned to start in October this year, with completion by March 2026.
The project is estimated to cost £899,000.
The following contributions have been secured via successful funding bids: £499,000 from the Environment Agency, and £400,000 from United Utilities.
The cabinet is recommended to approve the total spend of £899,000 to deliver the project.
The report also highlights that there is a ‘lack of water’ in Sankey Canal.
“To ease this pressure, it is intended to collect surface water from this project and to discharge the drainage system into the Sankey Canal,” it adds.
“Completion of this scheme would assist in the supply of water to the Warrington section of canal to maintain an important biodiversity/environmental corridor and habitat during wetter periods.”
