AFTER only ever completing a five-mile bike ride, an ambitious young rugby player has taken on an outrageous 53-mile challenge to raise funds for a fresh kit for her team.

Bethany Chadwick, 11, from Bewsey, set herself the challenge to cycle and swim the astonishing distance over a month.

And sticking to her word, the under 11s rugby player for Warrington Girls CRFLC completed her distance one minute into the men’s rugby final at Wembley last Saturday.

The entire girls rugby team set out to fundraise £1,000 to fund vital equipment and a new kit for their club.

Detailing how the fundraising challenge came about, a spokesperson for the team said: “Bethany set herself a challenge to raise money for the club.

"She asked the Warrington Wolves Women's Super League team for help to decide on her swim and cycle challenge by voting for their favourite rugby league historical moment.

“With a final vote from parents, other team managers from the club and team mates, the winning moment was the 1954 Challenge Cup Final replay at Odsal Stadium between Halifax and Warrington Wolves.

“The distance she had to complete was the distance from her home ground at Crosfields to the Odsal Stadium. A whopping 53 miles.

“Doing a combination of swimming and cycling she has chipped away at her target distance throughout the month of May.”

With 29km left on the clock, the determined 11-year-old put her goggles on and got to swimming on the morning of Saturday – a major day for local rugby fans as Warrington Wolves went head-to-head with Wigan Warriors in the Challenge Cup final at Wembley.

After spending the morning chipping away at the miles in the pool, Bethany took to the bike to complete the remaining miles on land.

“She's never done such a long distance either swimming or cycling before,” a spokesperson for the team said.

“The longest she's done is probably a 5km bike ride. She's very proud and it's ignited a fire in her to do more exercise because it helps keep her fit but also calm.”
