THE identity of a man found dead at Widnes Market has been confirmed by a coroner.

David Prescott, of Widnes, died aged 39 on February 12 off Bradley Way in the town, Warrington Coroner’s Court heard on Wednesday.

On the morning of February 12, he was found deceased in a sheltered area close to the staff entrance at Widnes Market.

A large emergency service presence of police and paramedics was reported at the scene at the time, with traders experiencing a delay before opening.

A post-mortem examination was undertaken at Warrington Hospital mortuary on February 15.

It was heard that Mr Prescott’s identification was confirmed by a police officer at the scene.

A coroner’s officer said: “The reason for the inquest is toxicology reports showing an unnatural cause of death.”

The officer added: “It is requested that an inquest be opened and adjourned for further work to be completed.”

Jacqueline Devonish, senior coroner for Cheshire, agreed to the request.

She said: “On the evidence I have heard, I am satisfied that the case of David Anthony Prescott will require an inquest.

“I therefore formally open the inquest and adjourn the case to be heard on August 2.”

At the time of the incident, a spokesman for Cheshire Police said: “At 6.34am on Monday, February 12, police were notified that the body of a man had been found in the location of Widnes Market on Bradley Way.

“The death is not believed to be suspicious, and a case file will be prepared for the coroner.”
