POLICE say they have a man in custody after he allegedly stopped on the motorway ‘to smoke heroin’.

Officers from Merseyside Police’s Roads Policing Unit came across a black Audi that had pulled over onto the hard shoulder of the M62 this morning, Tuesday.

On approaching the vehicle, close to junction seven for Rainhill Stoops, they say the driver was ‘in the process of smoking heroin’.

Seeming him ‘clearly unfit’ to drive, a drugs wipe was conducted and this tested positive for cocaine, the force says.

The Roads Policing Unit said: “We stopped to check if this driver was okay on the M62 near to Rainhill.

“He hadn't broken down – in fact, he was in the process of smoking heroin.

“He was clearly unfit and the driver tested positive on a drugs wipe for cocaine. His drugs were seized and he was taken to custody.”

Officers added: “We do not have a roadside test for heroin, but we have other evidential tests to determine the person’s fitness to drive.

“If they are unfit and we suspect drugs, they get arrested on suspicion of being unfit through drugs. This master criminal made it easy for us.”
