FOUR Warrington schools have been featured in The Times list of best primary schools in the country.

Families across Warrington will hear today, Tuesday, which primary school their children will attend at the start of the new school year in September.

The Times reported that experts predicted ‘more than 90 per cent of parents are expected to secure their first choice, but up to 45,000 children will have to settle for one of their lower preferences’.

And the publication revealed a list of the top 500 primary schools in England – making up three per cent of the 16,783 primaries in the country.

The ranking based upon each schools average scores in English, grammar and maths.

Primary schools in Warrington that featured in the list included Stretton St Matthew’s CofE Primary school (ranked 61st), Evelyn Street Primary Academy (ranked 84th), Bruche Primary Academy School (ranked 159th) and Grappenhall Heys Community Primary school (ranked 310th).

St Luke's in Lowton is also on the list, although this is technically in the Wigan borough.

The Times reported that ‘the latest data shows that across the country combined reading, writing and maths levels are still lower than they were before Covid’.

However, the data also highlighted ‘how well some schools have helped the so-called “lost generation” to recover after Covid, as teachers grappled with falling attendance, a mental health crisis, overweight and screen-addicted children and even pupils turning up to school in nappies’.
