A SUSPECT has been named by police after a bus driver was ‘slapped’ during a ‘road rage’ incident.

It comes following news yesterday, Wednesday, that a man had been arrested on suspicion of assault in connection with the report.

Cheshire Police released video footage of the incident, which was captured by CCTV on the bus, and described it as ‘abhorrent and completely unacceptable’.

At around 6.30pm on Friday, a bus driver came to a stop along Newhaven Road in Orford when the driver of a black Ford S-Max was said to have pulled up alongside him.

The driver of the Ford is reported to have exited his vehicle and got on the bus using a button to open the door from the outside.

Cheshire Police allege he then ‘slapped’ the bus driver across the face, before going back to his car and driving off.

A 31-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault, with the force confirming a man has now been charged.

In an update today, a spokesman said: “A man has been charged in connection with the assault of a bus driver

“Benjamin Johnson, of Windemere Avenue in Orford, was arrested on Wednesday, April 10, following an assault which occurred at around 6.30pm on Friday, April 5.

“The 31-year-old has since been charged with assault and a public disorder offence.

“He has been bailed to appear at Warrington Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, May 22.”

Following the incident, inspector Lee Hillyard said: “This behaviour is abhorrent and completely unacceptable.

“Bus drivers provide a public service to the communities in Warrington, and they deserve to feel safe and respected while at work.

“We will continue to work with our partners at Warrington Borough Council to ensure safety and support for those who help deliver public transport.”
