COUNCILLORS will discuss a motion on ending child poverty next week.

At the full council meeting on Monday, the motion is set to be proposed by Labour’s Cllr Sarah Hall, cabinet member for children’s services, and seconded by Labour’s Cllr Una Gillham.

The motion says: “Despite living in one of the richest countries in the world, over 4 million children in the UK are living in poverty.

“One in six children in Warrington are living in poverty. The share of children living in absolute poverty in the UK has risen by its highest rate for 30 years.”

If the motion is passed, it will see the council write to both Warrington MPs to lobby the Government to ‘address the funding gap in children’s services and take urgent action to reduce the shocking levels of child poverty’, write to both Warrington MPs to lobby the Government to introduce free breakfast clubs for children at school, write to both MPs to lobby the Government to introduce new measures to end child poverty in Warrington, and to take action through Cllr Hall’s poverty commission to ‘understand the root causes of poverty and see what solutions can be applied locally’.
