GATES have been deliberately opened allowing horses to escape in Warrington, say police.

The force has revealed that there has been an increase in suspicious activity in certain areas of the town.

They say this is particularly in areas where horses are stabled, including in the Winwick, Croft, and Risley areas.

Today alone, officers have received two reports of unknown persons loitering near farms, livery yards, and stables.

And on two occasions, police say gates have been deliberately opened, allowing horses to escape, placing them at risk of injury.

Officers say they are also aware of an increase in tack/equipment thefts at various locations.

A Facebook post by Warrington Police reads: “This afternoon our northern officer has been out visiting various locations to engage with riders/landowners to ensure that measures are put in place to increase security and encourage the horse-riding community to spread the word and be vigilant.”

Following the increase in suspicious activity, officers are urging residents to take extra measures to secure tack rooms, to mark equipment, and to ensure that gates are locked at night and that fences are well maintained.

The force is also asking residents to report any suspicious activity to it by:

  • Calling 101 for non-emergency incidents
  • Visiting its webpage to report online here https://orlo.uk/aTDiC
  • Calling 999 in the event of an emergency
