THE streets and roads in Warrington on which the most crimes were recorded throughout 2023 can now be revealed.

This follows a Warrington Guardian study looking at reported crimes for every street across the town, as published on the Home Office-run website Police.uk.

Data from Cheshire Police is available for the whole of the county of Cheshire, and it has been filtered down to crimes reported in Warrington between January and December 2023.

It should be noted that the list of crimes published on Police.uk is 'reported crimes' - this could mean that a crime could have been reported multiple times.

Equally, a number of crimes will go unreported in Warrington.

Moreover, a street may feature higher due to incidents at an event taking place there, taking Creamfields for example, while others may have a location visited by lots of people, such as a hospital or large supermarket.

Others are on some of the longest streets or roads in the town.

The 10 streets in Warrington with the highest number of crimes reported in 2023 are as follows:

1. Hollins Lane, Winwick – 160

2. Bridge Foot, town centre – 146

3. Patten Lane, town centre – 115

4. Hamnett Court, Birchwood – 90

In total, there were 17,009 crimes reported to Cheshire Police in Warrington in 2023, according to the Police.uk data.

This demonstrates a fall of 11.6 per cent in reported crime compared to 2022, during which the force was informed of 18,979 offences in the town.

It is also a reduction on the 17,473 offences reported to officers in 2021.

It works out at a rate of 80.39 crimes reported for every 1,000 Warrington residents in 2023, using Warrington Borough Council’s 211,580 mid-year population estimate from 2022.

This is below the 83.77 rate for England, according to Crime Rate UK, but above the 75.88 rate for the UK as a whole.

However, it is a vast improvement on the rate of 90.37 Warrington recorded in 2022.

Violent and sexual offences, which are placed in the same category, were the most prevalent types of crime in the town in 2023, with 7,201 reported.

This was followed by reports of anti-social behaviour (2,166), public disorder (1,661), criminal damage and arson (1,202) and other theft (1,105).

Other theft includes offences such as theft by an employee, blackmail and making off without payment.

In response to the study, chief inspector Neil Drum, of the Warrington policing unit, said: “While the figure for some of the streets may sound concerning, it is important that they are put into context.

“For example, many of the streets listed are near busy shopping centres, medical facilities or around the town centre.

“These types of areas tend to receive a higher proportion of reported incidents than others.

“Our beat management teams closely monitor repeat demand, and whenever a location is highlighted as an area of concern, they will always undertake problem solving work to address this.

“It is also important to note that the data itself doesn’t accurately show which streets are the most affected by crimes.

“It merely highlights which areas in the town are more affected by crime than others.

“For example, while Hollins Lane in Winwick is highlighted as having 160 incidents in 2023, that does not mean they all occurred on that specific street.

“Hollins Lane is simply the name of the snap point name used by Crimemapper to highlight incidents in the wider Winwick area.

“Regardless of the location, I want to reassure anyone who lives, works or visits the town that whenever there is a report of a crime, we take it seriously and will do everything we can to investigate what has happened, find those responsible and provide support to victims.”
