A FIRST aider for the Latchford Giants youth football team will run the London Marathon in memory of a player’s younger sister who tragically lost her cancer battle aged nine.

Anthony Smith, from Grappenhall, has been a first aid support for the under 16 team for the last two years, providing aid to players both on and off the pitch.

After hearing how one of the teammate’s younger sisters had sadly lost her battle with Neuroblastoma this year, Anthony decided he would complete the 26-mile marathon in order to raise money for Solving Kids Cancer UK.

Anthony’s daughter, Ruby Smith, described what an ‘inspiration’ her dad is.

The 18-year-old said: “My dad is an enormous inspiration to me after suffering a slipped disc in his back over a decade ago and learning to walk again, to now being able to train for something so unimaginable and we thought would never happen.”

Ruby added that her dad has raised an incredible £2,000 for the charity so far and will continue to fund raise on his just giving page until the date of the marathon on Sunday, April 21.

“The Latchford Giants U16 team have made a collaborative effort to help fundraise and help my dad raise money for Solving Kids Cancer UK, a charity very close to the family’s heart,” she said.

Anthony has been training hard in preparation for the event. If you would like to support the cause visit his Just Giving Page here.
