A POPULAR teacher and church member has been remembered following her death aged 82.

Miriam Jones was a former secondary school teacher in Warrington and a member of St John Henry Newman Church.

She died on February 18 from motor neurone disease.

Born in Warrington, she lived in Orford and Bruche and is survived by siblings Nancy, Nora and David. Auntie to 28 nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held on March 15 at John Henry Newman Church followed by Padgate Christ Church Cemetery.

Fr Peter Montgomery officiated.

Educated at Notre Dame high school, Wigan and Edinburgh University.

Taught at St Benedict's Primary School Warrington from 1965 to 1968. Worked as a volunteer teacher in Dawson Creek, Port Simpson and Eddantenajon, British Columbia, Canada for four years between 1968 and 1973, this included two years on Native American reservations.

Taught at English Martyrs High School, Warrington until it amalgamated with St John's and became Cardinal Newman High school. Retired in 1993 but continued to supply teach in Warrington high schools.

Miriam was a dear friend to many, a wonderful caring sister and a beloved aunt to her many nieces and nephews.

Following the untimely death of her sister Margaret, followed by her brother in law John in 1990, Miriam cared for their children, moving into their family home and became a 'surrogate mother' to the family.

Miriam enjoyed hiking and rambling, she spent holidays with family and friends in Britain and abroad, often camping.

Miriam was an active member of Saint John Henry Newman church. Despite having motor neurone disease.
