A WARRINGTON station which was revamped last year has won a ‘best kept’ award.

Glazebrook was awarded for being the best kept station in Halton & Warrington during the Cheshire awards given by Northern Railway.

It was reported by the Warrington Guardian last year that a team of hard-working volunteers, known as the Friends of Glazebrook Station, began working on revamping the station in July 2022.

And an open day was held in September 2023 to showcase the revamp of the 150-year-old station.

Financial support was given from Northern Rail and Traffic for Greater Manchester and platform planters were installed by the Growth Company.

Hanging baskets were put in to enhance the exterior of the waiting rooms, and the undergrowth was cleared from the garden site along with the station approaches - made possible thanks to a National Lottery grant.

And all the volunteers hard work has not gone to waste, with this recent recognition by National Railway highlighting the benefits of the revamp.

The awards, which are celebrating their 21st anniversary this year, were presented by Professor Paul Salveson MBE in Northwich last Tuesday (March 12).

Craig Harrop, regional director for Northern, said: “I’d like to congratulate all my colleagues and the volunteer groups at stations across Cheshire that were recognised at the awards last week.

“Their commitment to excellence in terms of the presentation, operation and overall customer experience of their stations is remarkable and the awards are a great opportunity to highlight their hard work.”

Speaking at the awards ceremony last week, Mark Barker, chair of Cheshire Best Kept Stations, said: “What volunteers do is amazing; the passion, commitment, ingenuity, resourcefulness and sheer hard work has improved your stations for passengers, the community, the railway and for yourselves."
