THE Mersey has burst its banks after a flood alert was issued for the town.

It comes as three red flood warnings and an amber flood alert in Warrington have been extended to a third consecutive day.

They have been issued along the River Mersey estuary in the town and are due to high river tides.

They follow similar warnings and alerts issued on Monday and Tuesday of this week.

As of this afternoon, Wednesday, water is bursting through the wall underneath the railway bridge at Bridge Foot.

It means pedestrians are unable to use the footpath into town.

Warrington Guardian:

And yesterday, water was overflowing onto a footpath around Victoria Park from Howley Weir.

Areas covered by the flood warnings are Victoria Park, Arpley Road, Chester Road close to Brian Bevan Island, land close to Ferry Tavern pub in Penketh and Riverside Trading Estate.

The alert meanwhile extends into Woolston Eyes, The Twiggeries, Cardinal Newman High School, Howley, Latchford, Centre Park, Slutchers Lane, Lower Walton, Sankey Bridges and Penketh.
