ONE of Warrington’s oldest pubs has been given the go-ahead to make improvements to its beer garden.

Plans were submitted to Warrington Borough Council’s planning department last spring in relation to The Black Swan pub in Hollins Green.

The popular watering hole and eatery on Manchester Road sought permission to demolish its existing outdoor timber-framed barbeque and bar.

In its place, applicant North Cheshire Developments wants to build a new outdoor bar and timber-framed pavilion, as well as make alterations to the paved and gravel footpaths.

Despite an objection from Rixton with Glazebrook Parish Council over green belt encroachment and the removal of historic hedgerows, permission has been granted.

Constructed in the 17th century, the pub has undergone a number of changes throughout its lifetime to suit the needs of the local residents in the area to remain a successful business.

It was also locally listed in 2014 as an important community asset in the village.

Documents state: “The proposal is to improve the facilities within the outdoor realm for customers of the pub, removing the existing outdoor barbeque and bar area which is reaching the end of its serviceable life.”

They conclude: “The proposal, if approved, would meet the future needs of the business that operates the public house and hotel.

“This development will attempt to address the needs to improve the recreational facilities for members of the public, while creating an attractive outdoor space close to the public house.

“In the short-term, employment will be brought into the area during the construction period, and the future need for maintenance for will be required.

“In the long-term, it is envisaged that this scheme will enhance the appeal of the public house, making it a destination place which would increase the revenue of the business, thus creating new employment opportunities.”
