A LANDLORD has voiced his frustration with a housing association over a reported lack of action to combat fly-tipping.

Phil Peters, who owns and rents out a property on Grasmere Avenue in Orford, says he has reported numerous incidents of rubbish being dumped over the past six months.

However, he says nothing is done about it.

“I have been reporting fly-tipping against my property on Grasmere Avenue to Warrington Borough Council and Torus since last summer,” he said.

“In emails, Torus says it will send a team down to clean up, but nobody ever comes. It is a serious health matter.

“When I made the first report in the middle of last year to both the council and Torus, neither wanted to take responsibility.

“Torus did send somebody out last year to the footpath, but left building bags full of soil, causing a hazard to my tenants.

“My tenant has been on to me all year about the situation getting worse, so I have constantly been on to Torus.

“It keeps saying it will send a team around but nobody ever comes, and each week for months, the situation has got worse and worse.”

Phill said he has asked for an investigation into who is fly-tipping and for signs and CCTV to be put up as it has caused ‘a lot of stress and anxiety’.

“It has got so bad, I am worried somebody will get hurt or an infestation of rats will begin,” he continued.

“My tenant has a young baby living in the property near where they are dumping everything, and I feel like no one is helping to solve the problem.

“I feel very let down by the council and Torus for letting this escalate and doing nothing about it.”

Within a day of the Warrington Guardian approaching Torus and the council about the fly-tipping, the rubbish was removed.

When asked by the Warrington Guardian, a council spokesman said that the land belongs to Torus, so it is for Torus to respond.

Jan Calland, housing services director for Torus, said: “While the site has now been cleared, we understand the frustration for residents and sincerely apologise for the delay in clearing the fly-tipping from this location.

“Torus takes fly-tipping seriously, and we are continuing to work closely with partners including Warrington Borough Council to enforce action against any perpetrators of environmental crime.

“Neighbourhood officers regularly monitor this area, and residents are encouraged to report issues, use appropriate methods to dispose of their bulky waste such as the council’s collection scheme or visit a community recycling centre.

“You can visit torus.co.uk/waste for more information.”
