ONE of Warrington’s MPs has asked the Government when it will be calling a general election.

Labour Warrington North MP Charlotte Nichols submitted a written question on the issue to the Cabinet Office.

The maximum term of a Parliament is five years from the day on which it first met, with the current Parliament first meeting on December 17, 2019.

It will automatically dissolve on December 17 this year or sooner, and polling would be expected to take place 25 days later, not counting weekends or any bank holidays that fall within this period.

Ms Nichols asked the Minister for the Cabinet Office: “When does the Prime Minister plan to call the next general election?”

In response, Conservative MP Alex Burghart, Parliamentary Secretary to the Cabinet Office, said: “Under the Dissolution and Calling of Parliament Act 2022, the precise timing of the next general election is a matter for the Prime Minister.

“A general election must take place by January 2025.

“As the honourable member will be aware, the Prime Minister has indicated recently that his working assumption is that a general election will take place in the second half of this year.

“Although, of course, this remains a matter for the Prime Minister’s discretion.

“In the meantime, the Government is working to deliver a brighter future for Britain, with long-term economic security and opportunity.

“Where hard work is always rewarded, where ambition and aspiration are celebrated, where young people get the skills they need to succeed in life.

“Where families are supported, where those who have worked hard all their lives have the dignity they deserve in retirement and with security at home and abroad.”
