A DEDICATED volunteer group who transformed Burtonwood’s fly-tipping hotspot into The Puddle, will embark on an exciting race against time, walking from the site to Paris in time to witness the opening of the Paralympic Games.

Members of the team who played a crucial role in the Puddle Project are now setting their sights further afield to race against the clock and walk a staggering 420 miles from Burtonwood to France’s capital in just a week.

The brave volunteers will set off on their prodigious journey from the site, that has seen an immense transformation within the past decade, on Wednesday, August 21.

A spokesperson for the group said: “In just seven days and seven nights covering 420 miles, our incredible team of service users, dedicated service providers, and passionate local businesses will unite for a cause that goes beyond borders.

“This awe-inspiring feat is not just a physical accomplishment; it's a testament to the strength of community and the power of unity.”

Members of The Puddle Project worked tirelessly to change an area of Burtonwood notorious for fly-tipping, based at Fearnly Wood on Alder Lane, and brought it back to life.

The project featured on George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces in 2019 and teamed up with a variety of working partners including MacIntyre charity to fully utilise the venue and make the most of the space available.

And it was officially opened in July 2021 to the community.

Among the facilities available at the environmental site is the Lily Pad room, which is a space that can be used as a classroom, tearoom or for meetings as well as a sensory garden that can be used for outdoor activities such as yoga, and an arts and crafts workshop.

Now embarking on a new adventure to raise funds and support the 2024 Paralympics, the team will trek across the channel, with the Eiffel Tower in their sights.

One member of The Puddle Project, Dylan said: “‘I am very excited about the Puddle2Paris.

“I am always walking to different places but I feel like this is going to be a great challenge that will push me.

“I think it will be really fun working with Wickes again and all of the amazing local businesses like Decathlon that are supporting us. I am to walk 10 miles, to add to the distance and help my friends where I can. Hopefully I can push myself further.”

Another member added: “I am very excited, I think it will be quite challenging but I know we can do it. I can’t wait to see Wickes again, as they have supported us a lot and they make us laugh.

“I am going to motivate the Friday Group and cheer everyone else on. Bring it on.”
