SHOPLIFTING in Warrington remains a ‘serious problem’, according to one of the town’s MPs.

Warrington South MP Andy Carter says he has raised the issue during s catch-up in Westminster to ensure the Prime Minister is aware of it.

The Conservative politician says professional shoplifting gangs are a major issue, particularly for smaller businesses.

He added that he is committed to ensuring the police and courts have the resources available to punish those responsible.

Mr Carter said: “Back at Downing Street today for a catch-up and to make sure the PM knows about the issues that matter in Warrington South.

“Figures for most reported crimes have fallen by around 10 per cent since 2010, and today we have 20,000 more police officers on our streets.

“But shop theft remains a serious problem, especially in some of our smaller community stores that have been targeted by professional gangs – as I heard during recent visits to Dallam Stores.

“The Government is determined to tackle both the thefts and threats being made to shop staff.

“I am convinced we can take tougher action to tackle crime, and I am committed to ensuring that the police have the resources and powers they need to bring criminals to account, and the courts use the appropriate sentencing to take them off our streets.”
