A CAMPAIGN in memory of Brianna Ghey to improve mental health and wellbeing support for schoolchildren will be the subject of a parliamentary debate.

Warrington North MP Charlotte Nichols has confirmed that the Peace in Mind project will be debated in Westminster Hall on Wednesday, February 7, following a successful ballot.

The Peace in Mind campaign was established by the Warrington Guardian, working alongside Brianna's mum, Esther, to create a legacy for her daughter.

Two teenagers were found guilty of Brianna's murder in December, with the Birchwood schoolgirl having been fatally stabbed in Culcheth Linear Park last February.

The killers, who currently cannot be named for legal reasons, are due to be sentenced at Manchester Crown Court on Friday.

Confirming news of the debate, Ms Nichols said: “I am delighted to have been successful in the ballot to secure a Westminster Hall debate next week on Mindfulness in Schools, to discuss the Peace in Mind project in Warrington and the goal of making this national policy.

“It has been in the ballot for a while now, which has been frustrating, but given next Sunday is the anniversary, I cannot help but feel it has come at exactly the right time. Serendipitous, almost.”

Commenting on the news on the official Peace in Mind Facebook page, Esher added: “This is the best news I have had all week.

“Thank you to Charlotte Nichols MP for driving our campaign through to the next stage.

“Let’s get mindfulness into all schools in England and plant seeds of resilience, empathy and unity.”

Raising money for the Mindfulness in Schools Project (MiSP), the Peace in Mind campaign aims to improve mental health and wellbeing support for schoolchildren across the country, beginning in Warrington.

Esther completed the Great North Swim last summer, raising more than £20,000 for MiSP.

The Peace in Mind campaign aims to raise £50,000, which would bring the total raised for the charity in memory of Brianna to £70,000.

This £70,000 would pay for almost 100 members of school staff in Warrington to be trained by MiSP in mindfulness practices, and it is hoped this would have a knock-on effect of improving the support for children in schools.

The Peace in Mind campaign has had the support of Warrington Borough Council, as well as both of the town's MPs, and Warrington Wolves.

Businesses have also backed the campaign, with a number of fundraisers being held in the months since the campaign kicked off.

At present, an online donations page set up by the project has raised more than £49,000 – close to hitting it’s £50,000 target.
