Award-winning pie shop Tomlins Bakery is serving speciality hot pies today, Tuesday, to mark National Pie Day.

Today, Tuesday, is a whole day dedicated to pies and Mark and Sonya Fitzpatrick at Tomlins have added a new special to the menu.

A pie is the perfect mid-winter treat to warm the hearts and taste buds of pie lovers.

As British people - and northerners - we love a good pie and as a nation we consume more than £1billion worth of the tasty treats every year.

With endless choices about how to enjoy a pie - hot or cold, sweet or savoury, short crust, filo or puffed pastry - it's no easy task to pick a favourite.

Tomlins Bakery has been keeping customers happy and well fed for more than a century after opening its doors in 1905 when mother and daughter Clarise and Lucy Holbrook started a bakery and confectionary business.

Over the past 118 years, customers have queued out the door to buy one of the mouth-wateringly delicious pies and other baked goods and last year, you voted them the best in Warrington as they took the Best for Pies 2023 title.

This year’s National Pie Day creation was made by Mark’s daughter Abi after last year’s offering the New Zealand mince and cheese pie remained a firm fixture on the menu.

Mark said: “We spent Monday making all the pies in readiness for National Pie Day and we can categorically confirm that they are divine.

“The pie was influenced and created by Abi and it’s perfect for National Pie Day.

“Let’s see if it can stay on the menu like the New Zealand pie last year.”

Husband and wife team Sonya and Mark took over at the helm in May 2022 after growing up in houses close to the bakery and frequenting the shop throughout their lives.

George Tomlin bought the business from the Holbrook family just after the Second World War and transformed it into the popular bakery it still is today.

The tried and tested recipes and ingredients that were used to make the first pies decades ago are still used today – closely guarded secrets that are revealed to only a few members of staff and with a new addition in honour of National Pie Day.
