WARRINGTON’S growing team of litter heroes collected an impressive total of rubbish bags across 2023.

Teams managed to collect 7,749 bags of rubbish last year through the commitment of ten reporting volunteer groups, as well as solo pickers from across the area.

Tony Dixon, organiser of Warrington’s Tuesday and Sunday litter teams, said: “Our 10 volunteer litter teams are gradually succeeding in tidying the worst of the town's hotspots.

“We hope to encourage community pride in a tidy environment so that this might become self-sustaining in more areas.”

Despite not beating the record-high total of 8,295 litter bags collected in 2022, Tony revealed this could be due to natural variation, or that after visibly removing 22,000 bags over three years, Warrington is significantly tidier.

The teams are affiliated with Keep Britain Tidy, an organisation inspiring people to eliminate litter, and work very closely with the Warrington Borough Council.

Regular volunteers are well-equipped and taught to litter pick safely.

The teams have hosted a range of litter-picking events across the year, including the April 2023 Great British Spring Clean, where a record number of 487 bags were collected.

Another was the Warrington Crown Litter Pick in May, which saw volunteers clear more than 200 litter bags on a route the shape of a crown to mark the coronation.

Tony said: “Litter picking is a mindful and sociable form of outdoor exercise.

“It benefits the individual, the community and our natural environment. Every bit of litter counts.”

As the litter-picking movement continues to grow, more groups are developing, and volunteers are always welcome in any team to help make Warrington a cleaner space.

New teams will be based in Whitecross, a new stadium team at Warrington Wolves Charitable Foundation and Victoria Park.

There are ‘10-minute street clean’ kit bases for short-term public use which can be found at Holy Trinity Church and the Gateway Centre on Sankey Street.

“If each person picked up one piece per day we could transform the town in a matter of weeks,” added Tony.
