A MAJOR road in Warrington has been closed due to flooding.

Ackers Road in Stockton Heath has been blocked off after a section of the road has become waterlogged following the heavy rainfall today, Tuesday.

Flood warning signs and ‘road ahead closed’ signs have been put up along with cones to warn drivers not to use the route.

Drivers coming into town from Grappenhall have been seen stopping and turning away from the road which is now covered by an excess of water.

A diversion route has been put in place leading back up to the direction of Cantilever Bridge and taking a right turn back through to the other side of Ackers Road.

This comes after the Met Office issued a yellow weather waning for the north west, with flood warnings in force throughout England.

‘Heavy and persistent rain’ was predicted throughout the region today.

The Met Office said: “Local flooding is probable from rivers and surface water widely across England today, Tuesday.

“Local inland flooding is also possible on Thursday and Friday due to further heavy rainfall. Some river flooding may continue throughout the next five days. Land, roads and some properties could flood and there could be travel disruption.”

Warrington Buses have confirmed diversions are in place for its Grappenhall Heys service inbound.

A spokesperson said: "Diversions are in place on the 6 because of flooding on Ackers Road.

"The outbound service to Grappenhall Heys is normal however the inbound is diverting via Knutsford road, Loushers Lane to the Causeway and back to normal route."
